Slow days and Half tones

Well the past few days have been coming pretty slow not much jobs fro this little town! But i still trying to keep busy.

I have a friend woh is wanting to start his own clothing brand so i am going to be the one to make the shirts and what not and help design also. Ill have some pictures of the first shirts i make for him when that is done! it will be a Whit and Black 2 color print on a bunch of differnet color shirts. They will come out good and hopefully start business with him as his business grows too.

I also am going to be trying half tones! i have tried some pretty detailed images before but nothing like hal tones so ill be having some pictures about that and how it goes.

For the half tones i just have Photoshop and for this certian image it is just black and white photo so i simply went to flatten it and grayscale the image. When that was done i used bitmap to make the half tones. This next part i now sure about.. but i use a 165 setting to i have more define image and i used 55 and 45 degree angle although i have no idea what that is for. I'll fine out soon tho. but i print it and it came out good and seems dark enough so we'll see how it exposes.

How to coat a Screen!

Make sure you have a degreased, dry silk screen ready for use.

For this use the CCI DXP Diazo-Photopolymer Dual Cure Direct Emulsion from ryonet.

Mix up your photo emulsion according to the directions on the package. The emulsion has two parts, the first being a pink liquid, the second a clear "activator." The emulsion is light-sensitive when these two parts are combined, attaining its greatest sensitivity when fully dry.

Pour about 4 oz. of the mixed emulsion into a scoop coater.

Place the silk screen in a vertical position tipped slightly back, about 75 to 70 degree angle from the floor with the flat side of the screen facing you. Make sure that it is wedged in such a way so as not to move when you apply pressure to it.

Hold the scoop coater horizontally in both hands and press with enough pressure so that a bead line is across the screen. Tip the scoop coater so that the emulsion makes even contact across the entire lip of the coater and the tape of the screen.

Pull upward until you reach the top of the screen but a inch or so from the frame. There should now be an even, thin film of emulsion across the surface of the screen.

Tip the scoop coater back, breaking contact with the screen while being careful not to drip any emulsion. If there is any excess emulsion at the top of the screen that is threatening to move down onto its surface, wipe it away with a paper towel.

Repeat the process you have used for the two sides so as to coat the entire image area.

Wipe up any excess emulsion immediately after finishing the coating and place the screen face up in a dark closet or room to dry. This will take about 3 hours under normal conditions, but can be speeded up considerably by using a fan to blow air over the surface of the screen.

Use a plastic spatula to push the excess emulsion out of the scoop coater and into the container.

2 Color print!!

So i finally did my two color print and it came out ok! i like it

the print is a Black shirt with red and white print on it. Here it is...

This is thw final product. It came out good but the main problem i had was that registration. It was hard to get the
image on the same part of the screen and to line up on the pallet right but it came out good!

The press was the silver press from Ryonet and also using the red ryonet opaque ink allowed me not to have to use a white back and saving me ink and time. It worked great!

My brother, who it was for, liked it too. Now i need to practice getting the regstrations down and it'll be better.
Also i have finished the set up for every thing in the garage so i will be having a video on that along with how to apply emulsion to a screen.

So busniess is getting better but wit more and more practice i will be able to deliver beter and more appealing products to my customers.

Silver press fun

Well i just set up every thing in my garage and it is looking very good!! I will be having a video tour of it all and show the things that i made! but for now i have just used my four color silver press today! it works like a dream. Even though i have not printed more then one color i printed a patch today, and double printing is a thing of the past.

I had a image on a screen for my brother who had been wanting a patch of his band and i did the prints. A white print on black cloth and it came out great. when it was not white enough i simply flash cured it and printed again and it came out with no problems or double prints. this is a good advantage over the magnet press i was using before! Also i will have pictures of before the silver press and with it because the accuracy is great for the price!
i will soon be done a 2 color print and will have more on that as it comes up
Thanks,

Dont Over Load!

So i have another customer that came to me today and they are wanting a simple two color job. Basically they just want thier logo on the front and back of the shirt. it is a pretty simple design but i have not done a multi color yet. He said it wasn't in a rush but i still want to have good work done out and ready for him so that i might be able to get more customers.

Well busniess is kind of starting to pick up so the progress on my set up. I will have a set up for my new press and all and i will also be having a video on how to screen print when i get that done. But also a very important thing to remember is to not take a job that you cannot handle for a situation. I almost took a 300 shirt job with only my little one color press and a heat gun! that would have taken a VERY long time.

Although the profit on that job would have been amazing they needed all of them within a few days! but they ended up not ordering them and not being able to have anything made because a lack of budget.

Once i get maybe like a flash dryer such as Ryonets, 16x16" Econo Flash Dryer. it looks great and everything i have used from them has been perfect! i really looking into it i jus need the money to afford it

thanks

Shirts For The Dead!!!

The Funeral Shirts are Done! And here it is!

Heat Gun Problemo!!

Well the shirts for the funeral are all done! I got done faster than I thought it would take. Also my customers were very pleased with how they came out and the overall product. They were happy that I was able to get the shirts done fast and the quality.

Though the shirts came out good and I was able to make them in a short time production had a lot of standing moments because mainly of one thing. That is the heat gun!! It would be ok for small logos or for just a few shirts but for a lot and to speed up production it take something more like a flash dryer.

With the heat gun it takes up to 3 to 5 minutes just to cure the image and sometimes it is not a 100% thing. But for speeding up the production and to save time cutting it down to only about a minute would be great! I am thinking about saving up for a flash dry unit or something. But in the mean time I need a temporary solution for the dreaded heat gun I just don’t know any! Does anyone have a solution?

Other than that problem production for this shirt went good and according to plan and was pretty smooth. But really if anyone has an extra flash dryer or one they want to sell comment me and let me know I need a solution of some sort!

Thanks, Danny

Funeral shirt UPDATE!

So a quick update on the shirts I am making for the funeral is that i told the customer that i will have the shirts done and ready by tomorrow evening! i have everything set up i just need to print it and it will be done. They were happy with how fast i was able to get thing going and on the ball.

This is good so that they will refer me to their friends and hopefully bring in more business. Well the exposure part of the process is pretty easy! I still using my 500 watt halogen light. I am looking forward to trying to get a good black light exposure unit. Maybe the Aluminum UV Screen Exposure Unit 20"x24" from Ryonet Corp. and Silkscreeningsupplies.com . I know it is a good exposure unit and would help with half tones and detail designs!

Well more video will come up with progress on the shirt and also on the set up and use of the new press from Ryonet ! Also still working on a way to get a flash dryer unit because a heat gun just is not cutting it now it taking too long to cure one shirt. So if any one has an idea on making a make shift one for temporary or anything comment below and let me know!

First Order

So I still do not have my 4 color press set up but I am still going to print on my one color press I already have. Well this order is for a friend and their boss has just passed away 2 days ago. They really liked him and were more than a boss to his employees. But this order is going to be a simple one color print but I always have trouble figuring out how much to charge my customers when they ask how much I will charge.

I know there is no full proof way but I want to be able to know a ball park range on what to charge. I want to have good prices that will want customers to come back and refer me to other people but i also want to be able to make a profit so that I can save and continue to expand on my screen printing capabilities.

So far I think I am ok especially that my customer had purchased the shirts they wanted to be used and also and my profit is high enough for this order. In the past I usually charge like $10 per shirt for 5 shirts and that’s one color one side. Then of course the price varies from how many shirts to how many colors and if they want front and back.

Such as if I were to make 25 shirts that were 2 colors front only I would probably charge about $8 a shirt so that after purchasing the shirts I have room for profit and paid for my time.

But really I have a good time screen printing and to see the final result of an accomplishment is great! But more of this order will be up soon.

Thanks,
